Captain Michael Winters. Human male, ex-Naval Infantry . Winters is a man with a heart of gold that's so covered in sarcasm it's hard to see. He always does what's right, but sometimes needs a little prodding to do it. He's a natural leader who has the intelligence to out-think a brilliant Romulan commander, yet he probably has the scientific intellect of a three-year old. He will go to T'Noir for advice and council long before he goes to anyone else, though he shows a tendency to speak to Naomi lately. Speaks in military terms and constantly uses slang and... shall we say... colorful metaphors. Winters is a unique addition to the pantheon of captains Star Trek has seen. He is much more blue-collar and down to Earth. Just as Picard always let his inner-scientist show, and Sisko his inner-engineer, Winters will often make his former occupation as a soldier bleed through into his decision-making.
Has a meddling uncle who has ambitions of becoming leader of the High Council. The story basically goes like this; Uncle wants to be leader of the high council, and the best way to do that is to install his relatives in positions of power. Having his nephew in charge of a Starfleet vessel would be a good step in that direction, so naturally, he is trying to remove Winters, something that the honorable Kar'Das will do anything to stop... and cover up. His uncle is family after all. This leads to the great contradiction that builds his character - He won't betray his captain or his uncle, despite the fact that he likes nether.
Kar'Das is an honorable, but more reserved Klingon. He's not as crazy or disruptive as the others on the ship. He's more mature, less outspoken and certainly parties less.
Lt. Diavo Seccar. Female. Half Bajoran, half Cardassian, all attitude. Lt. Diavo is a self-destructive, self-hating Cardassian.
Raised by an outcast Bajoran mother, she knows nothing of her father, other than that he was Cardassian.
The heart of her character lies in her pessimism, her intolerance and her ability to find the negative in every situation. Hates Cardassians, and hates herself for being half-Cardassian. Has a history of self-abuse.
Ensign T'Noir. Female Romulan helmsman. A little... um... is bonkers a real word? Very random, tends to leave conversations at random, chase imaginary flies and spin around in circles for no reason.
A Romulan defector who left the Empire years ago, spending two years on a freighter that was rescued by Winters while he was on the Kamehameha. She has stayed with him ever since, and he gave her the rank of ensign as a field commission.
Lt. Commander Solkar. Vulcan male. Chief engineer of the Cardinal. Solkar's lack of imagination does not make him an ideal choice for engineering. None-the-less, Solkar was selected mostly for his stubborn adherence to protocol.
He is the Ying to everyone else's Yang, the one man on the ship that actually adheres to protocol. He looks upon his fellow crew members with fascination, especially the more illogical elements of it.
He is always in direct conflict with Tellus, who is his Romulan rival intent on bringing him down; Naomi, who constantly cuts corners to make things work and T'Noir, who is about as illogical as it gets!
Chief Naomi Wildman. Half human, half Ktarian female. One of very few members of the border patrol rated on Phoenix-class cutters.
Naomi is obviously our holdover from Voyager, filling a long-held tradition of connecting the series. She was not my first choice... not even close. In fact she may have been the last possible character I thought of. As it turns out, though, she was a blessing in disguise. She turned into one of my favorite characters.
How exactly is it she went from there to here? Well, watch the series and find out.
Who's Sabrina's father? Don't ask Naomi, she's not telling.
Naomi's biggest problem is her constant conflict with her past. With the exception of Winters, no one can get any of the truth about it out of her without serious prodding. Just what's going on with her and Winters? Well, let's see what happens.
Sabrina Wildman. Civilian on a military ship with very little to do. 3/4 Human, 1/4 Ktarian... maybe...
Sabrina is moody, depressive, annoying and full of both arrogance and self-doubt. In other words, a teenager. She also has that sort of superman complex most teenagers have. She always seems to think nothing is going to happen to her, which leads to a lot of problems for Winters and company to clean up.
The Doctor. The EMH Mark 7, the finest in Starfleet emergency medical holograms... Ever run a Windows program on a Mac? It's a lot like trying to run a Federation EMH on Romulan holo-emitters. Right from the pilot, the program is forever corrupted. Chief Wildman, through an ingenious re-programming, gets the audio to work, which allows the EMH to talk to the crew, though it has no hands with which to heal them.
Ensign Sienna Ballari. Human female. She is Cardinal's councilor who must learn to become its emergency medic.
Sienna is a 'manor kid.' On a ship full of those from less fortunate areas of the Federation. Sienna comes to us from Earth, the seat of all that is affluent and perfect - Which is a source of conflict from some members of the crew that would have given anything for what she gave up.
So why is there a councilor on the ship? Well, there's no good reason for her to be there, other than because of Federation bureaucracy and an over-abundance of councilors. Was she sent there to spy on Winters and the crew? Maybe the Klingons? Maybe she doesn't even know she's a spy?
Well, we'll make sure to answer those questions over time.
Ensign Tellus - Romulan male. Son of a Romulan defector, born and raised in the Federation.
Tellus' father was one of the principle designers of the Phoenix-Class cutter, specifically the 'micro-pulse thrusters' that make the ship so maneuverable.
He believed he should have been the choice for chief engineer over the logical and emotionless Solkar. Hates Solkar, dislikes Naomi and can't stand Klingons of any type. Obviously, this leads to a lot of conflict.
However, the most fun conflict comes between him and Winters. Neither of them really grew up, and this leads to a great deal of childish arguments, and a sort of competitive attitude between them. They will have a lot of meaningless conversations that turn into stupid arguments, and are a constant source of comic relief. He also fills the third part of the 'tri-partite soul' made up of Winters, Naomi and Tellus. He often represents the practical side of Winters' thoughts.
The following are more minor characters. While they seldom get the lead role, they are an important part of the background.
Crewman Tom McGreggor and Crewman Alera Galar - Human male and Bajoran female. The "Hit-Squad." Two life-long friends who have worked as a team since as far back as they can remember. Each live fast and savor dangerous situations.
Think of them as Frick and Frack. They are always together, and always on the same side. They are sort of a bridge between the main characters and the minor ones. They show up more than the minors but less than the majors.
Alera is the deeper character of the two. She's actually a functioning alcoholic, something that Winters doesn't take seriously... until it bites Alera (and Winters) in the ass in early season two.
Crewman Prot - Ferengi male. Relief helmsman. A 'shunner.' Prot is one of a number of Ferengi who shunned his former way of life in order to join Starfleet. Disliked by other Ferengi
CFC Zara - Zara'Byte Male. Highly intelligent. Snidgit. Shows an ability to make fast decisions, which often leads to his taking command of the bridge while the others are in a senior staff meeting
The only thing you really need to know about his race is that they're loosely based on Plato's Republic. They also have no concept of nomenclature. No one on their planet has a name. He took the name Zara because he ran into certain difficulties trying to adjust to life in a universe based on names.
Bekk Kor'choth - Klingon male. Relief engineer. Anti-Matter specialist. Ring-leader of the Klingon junior officers who is often the cause of much of the tension between the human and Klingon crews.
Bekk Kered - Klingon male. Relief Ops officer. Inventory spec. Not as temperamental as the other Klingons, but still more loyal to Kor'Choth than any human
Bekk Bar'Kor - Klingon male. Relief helmsman. Ancestor of a Klingon Warrior who was captured by Romulans. Still remains partially dishonored. Hates all Romulans, especially his senior pilot, T'Noir
Gil Jil Orra - Cardassian female. Daughter of a labor camp administrator, something that does not appeal to Diavo or Alera. She is a representative from the Cardassian government, assigned in mid-season one as a result of the events in the pilot. Has seven kids who are all grown up now, though she never hesitates to talk about them.
