Not exactly Joss Weedon's resume, I know, but I'm hardly an outsider to film and TV. Though most of my work has been with NBC, I've always admired CBS, and look forward to working with them.
It should also be noted I have just entered negotiations to write the pilot episode of an upcoming TV series. More information on that will be available once it is official.
The ship is as much a character as its captain. Han Solo wasn't Han Solo without the Millennium Falcon - Mal Reynolds wasn't Mal Reynolds without Serenity. A ship requires a fitting name just like its captain does. A cardinal is more than a pretty red bird or a fast, single-engine aircraft; It has many meanings. I can't explain more without giving too much of the story away, but feel free to do the research and make your own guesses.
Naomi was a cute kid, and was the one child character that didn't bug the hell out of me, but other than that, didn't make a long-lasting impression. So why her? Well, she wasn't my first choice (or my second, or my third) for our hold-over character. What are the requirements for a hold-over?
1. Must be more of a plot device than a character - Characters that have been fleshed out already are useless
2. Must have a reasonable expectation of joining Starfleet or a Starfleet related organization - Otherwise, it's just stupid
3. Must not have left a bad taste in anyone's mouth - Wesley Crusher, for example, is a big no!
My first choice was Miral Paris. I liked the idea; She had Tom's sarcasm and B'elanna's temper. The trouble was, as I wrote with her, I realized I was writing Starbuck (from BSG). I like Starbuck and BSG, but if I want to see her, I'll watch BSG. Icheb was considered, as were Jake and Nog. Naomi was someone I never seriously considered until I began thinking about her, and giving her a psycho-analysis. Before long, I had extrapolated a completely different future than it appeared she was going to have when the series ended by throwing her one simple curveball. She soon became the deepest and fullest character in the crew, and one of the most fun to write, as well as a fan favorite.
